George’s father John was baptised in 1799 in Greenham Berkshire, the son of Charles and Hannah (aka Anne) Bellinger (nee Waite) who were married in 1795 in Bucklebury Berkshire.   

He worked as an Agricultural Labourer and a Shepherd.

John married Sarah Bolsher in 1840 in Enborne Berkshire. (Sarah was born c1816 in West Woodhay). The had the following children:

Henry 1843

George c1846 (died aged 11 in 1858, buried 22nd April at St Michael and All Angels Enborne)

William 1849

Sarah Ann 1852 (died aged 8 weeks, buried 16th December 1852 at St Michael and All Angels Enborne).

 

Sarah died aged 36 in 1852 not long after giving birth to her daughter Sarah Ann. She was buried on the 24th October at St Michael and All Angels Enborne.

 

John remarried in 1859 (marriage registered in Newbury), his 2nd wife was Sarah Hazell. Sarah was born c1819 in Greenham. Sarah had at least two illegitimate children before she married John. Harriet born in 1841, baptised in Greenham in 1841 and Elizabeth born in 1845, baptised in Greenham in 1847.

 

John and Sarah had two children, Charles born in 1857 (born before his parents married) and George born in 1859. Both boys were baptised in 1859 in Greenham.

 

In 1861 John (58), Sarah (40), Sarah’s daughter Elizabeth Hazell (16), John’s sons Henry (17) and William (11) and John and Sarah’s sons Charles (3) and George (1) were living in Skinner’s Green Enborne.

 

John (71), Sarah (49) their sons Charles (13), George (11) and Sarah’s grandson Henry William Hazell (2) were still living in Skinner’s Green in 1871.

 

George’s mother died aged 53 in 1873 she was laid to rest on the 7th May at St Michael and All Angels Enborne.

 

His father was recorded in the 1881 census living with his married son William (31) and his family at Wash Farm Newbury. He died aged 83 in the Newbury Workhouse on the 30th December 1882 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 3rd January 1883.

 

George in later life:

George worked as a Bricklayer. He married Elizabeth Wright in 1879 (marriage registered in Newbury).

(Elizabeth was born in 1859 in Newbury, the daughter of John and Livinia Wright (nee Challis) who were married in 1848. Elizabeth had a daughter Alice Mary born on the 14th February 1878 (later known as Alice Mary Bellinger) in Newbury before she married George)

 

George and Elizabeth had the following children:

Twins: Daisy and Rose 1889 (Daisy died aged 4 months in 1889, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 7th June)

William Cornelius 1892 (died aged 25 on the 31st May 1916 at the Battle of Jutland aboard HMS Queen Mary)

Ellen Elizabeth 1896

Francis Victor 1897

Evelyn Maud c1900 (died age 1 in 1901, buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 20th May)

 

In 1891 the family were living in Mayor’s Lane Newbury. By 1901 the family had moved to 16 Adey’s Buildings, Stroud Green, Newbury.

 

Elizabeth died aged 50 in 1909, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 12th June.

 

The 1911 census records George (52) living at 16 Adey’s Bulidings with his children George (31) Albert (17), Nellie (Ellen Elizabeth) (14) and Frank (Francis Victor) (13).

 

George married his sister-in-law Annie Livinia Preston in 1912 (marriage registered in Uxbridge Middlesex)

(Annie was the sister of George’s late wife Elizabeth. She married Thomas Preston in 1883. Thomas died aged 43 in 1909, at the time of his death they were living at 1 Arthur Road Newbury).

 

 After they married George and Annie Livinia lived at 1 Arthur Road until their deaths.

 

George died aged 72 on the 9th August 1932 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 12th August.

 

Annie Lavinia died aged 72 on the 12th February 1934, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 15th February.
