Martha Thatcher

1837-1922

 

Martha was born in 1837 in West Hanney, Berkshire, she was the youngest child of William and Mary Ann Belcher (nee Giles) who were married in West Hanney on the 12th February 1812.

 

Martha’s father William was a Carpenter, he was born c1786 in West Hanney. William died aged 80 in 1867, he was buried on the 24th March at St James the Great West Hanney.

 

Her mother Mary Ann was born c1792 in East Hanney. Mary Ann died aged 84 in 1877, she was buried on the 20th June at St James the Great, West Hanney.

 

William and Mary Ann had the following children baptised in West Hanney:

Mary Jane 1825 (died aged 5 in 1831 buried at St James the Great, West Hanney on the 13th July)

The 1841 census records Martha (4) living in West Hanney with her parents and siblings Caleb (19), John (11), Mary (9) and Ellen (7).

 

In 1851 Martha (13) was recorded living in Yattendon, Berkshire with her parents and siblings John (21), a Carpenter and Mary Jane (19).

 

Her parents were living at The Green, East Hanney in 1861. In 1871 her mother was living in Streatley.

 

 

Martha married Stephen Thatcher in 1859 (marriage registered in Newbury. No children found for this couple).

 

(Stephen was a Blacksmith. He was baptised in West Shefford, Berkshire the son of Charles and Maria Thatcher (nee Hatt) who were married in West Shefford in 1824.)

 

In 1861 and 1871 Stephen and Martha were recorded living in the village of Streatley, Berkshire.

 

The 1881 census records them living in Henley on Thames, Oxfordshire. By 1901 they had moved to Newbury (Newmarket Street)

 

Martha was widowed in 1906, Stephen died aged 75, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 3rd February.

 

The 1911 census records Martha (73) in the Newbury Workhouse.

 

She died in the Workhouse aged 82 in 1922 and was buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 7th April.
