Martha was born in Marlborough Wiltshire, she was baptised on the 27th September 1818 at St Peter and St Paul Marlborough Wiltshire, the daughter of Thomas (an Ostler) and Mary Plank (nee Weatly) who married on the 18th June 1805 at St Mary the Virgin Marlborough.

Other known children of Thomas and Mary were (all baptised at St Peter and St Paul Marlborough):

Martha married Thomas Pearce on the 6th April 1837 at St Mary’s Church Thatcham Berkshire (both were from Greenham).

(Thomas was a Tailor he was born c1817 in Newbury, the son of Thomas and Phoebe Pearce (nee Dunn) who married on the 25th December 1815 at St Nicolas Newbury).

Martha and Thomas had the following children:

Edward Henry 1841  (aka Henry)

Edwin 1844

Tom Wright c1847 (no birth registration found)

Francis c1850 (no birth registration found)

Eliza c1853 (no birth registration found)

Louisa c1860

In 1851 Thomas (34), Martha (31) and their children, William Colin (13), George (12), Henry (9), Edwin (6), Tom Wright (4) and Francis (1) were living in Shaw Road, Newbury with Thomas’ parents Thomas (54), a Tailor and Phoebe (55).

The 1861 census records Thomas (44), Martha (41), Edwin (16), Tom (13), Frank (10), Eliza (8) and Louisa (1) living in Parr’s Yard, Newbury. Sons Edwin and Tom were both recorded as Tailors.

Thomas died aged 52 in 1868, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 15th August

The 1871 census records Martha (51) as a widow of a Journeyman Tailor living at 18 Alton Place, Newbury with Thomas (24), a Journeyman Tailor, Francis (21), a Journeyman Tailor, Eliza (18), a Tailoress and Louisa (11).

Martha died aged 72 (age at death registered as 70) on the 23rd February 1890, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 26th February.
