James Hayter  c1794-1858

 

James was baptised in 1794 in Combe Hampshire the son of John and Martha Hayter (nee Ball) who were married in Combe in 1793. John and Martha also had two other children baptised in Combe, Thomas in 1798 and Maria in 1803.

UK Royal Hospital Chelsea Pensioner Soldier Service Records, 1760-1920 record James as follows:

Name: James Hayter, Enlistment Age: 18, Discharge Age: 39, Birth Date: abt 1796, Birth Place: Coomb Wilts, Enlistment Year: 1814, Discharge Year: 1835, Regiment: 51st Regt of Foot, Regimental Number: 118

By 1841 James was lodging in Mary Hill, Newbury and was working as a Labourer (lodging with a Joseph Newbury (60) a Beer Seller and Ann Newbury (45) and John Newbury (10). Joseph Newberry died in 1847).

James married widow, Ann Newbery in 1851 in Newbury.

The 1851 census records James as a 55 year old Chelsea Pensioner living at 9 Winchcombe Place, Newbury with Ann (54) a Laundress.

He died aged 61 in 1858 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 11th August.

His widow Ann was recorded in the 1861 census living in Nutley Yard, Newbury. She died aged 71 in 1862 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the14th January.
