John was baptised on the 25th December 1766 at St Nicolas Church Newbury the son of John and Ann Griffin (nee Wheeler) who were married on either the 17th or 18th May 1755 at St Nicolas Church Newbury.

John married Charlotte Skinner on the 4th July 1788 at St Nicolas Church Newbury.

Charlotte was baptised on the 13th January 1762 the daughter of Timothy and Hannah Skinner (nee Tanner)

John and Charlotte had the following children baptised at St Nicolas Church Newbury:

Edward baptised 12th April 1789

Sarah baptised 12th June 1791 (married Richard Powell on the 10th October 1815 at St Nicolas Church Newbury)

Jane baptised 17th December 1794

Eliza born 23rd November 1796 baptised 9th December 1796

Hannah born 29th June 1801 baptised 22nd July 1801

Jane born 13th March 1803 baptised 24th April 1803

Mary Ann born 29th December1804 baptised 3rd February 1805

 

In the 1815 census of Newbury John (53) was recorded as a Labourer, living on the west side of Newtown Lane Newbury with his wife Charlotte (50), and their children, Eliza (18), Hannah (14), Jane (12) and Mary Ann (10).

Charlotte died aged 68 in 1828, she was laid to rest on the 1st November at St Nicolas Newbury.

The 1841 census records John (75), as a Cloth Maker, living in New Almshouses, Raymond’s Court,  Newbury, also recorded living with him were his daughter Sarah Powell (50) and grandchildren Mary Powell (15), a Bonnet Maker and Thomas Powell (13).

The 1851 census records John (86), living in Raymond’s Almshouses, Newbury, hid daughter Sarah Powell (60) and grandson Thomas Powell (21) were still living with him, Thomas was recorded as a Bricklayer.

John died aged 85 in 1851 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 10th May
