Mary Jane was born in 1868 in Newbury the daughter of George and Esther Moss (nee James) who were married in 1848 (marriage registered in Abingdon).

 George was baptised in 1825 in West Ilsley Berkshire the son of Thomas and Hannah Moss (nee Matthews) who were married in West Ilsley in 1825

 Esther was baptised (as Hester) in 1827 in East Hendred Berkshire the daughter of Abraham and Elizabeth James (nee Rixon) who were married in West Hendred Berkshire in 1822.

 Mary Jane’s siblings were:

 In 1851 George, Esther, their Charles (3), Thomas (2 months), George’s mother Hannah (55) and his brother Thomas (16), were living in West Ilsley. George was working as an Agricultural Labourer.

The 1861 census records the family living in Farnborough Road West Ilsley.

The 1871 census records George as a Maltster’s Labourer living in Elkins’ Yard Newbury with Esther, a Charwoman and their children, Thomas (20) a Shop Porter, Arthur (4) and Mary Jane (2).

By 1881 George, a Brewer’s Labourer, Esther and Mary Jane (13) were living at 19 Jack Street Newbury

 Mary Jane married Henry William Curtis on the 20th July 1889 at St John’s Church Newbury. (Henry was born in Newbury the son of Israel and Ann Curtis (nee Hussey) who were married in 1851 (marriage registered in Kingsclere).

 Henry and Mary Jane had the following three children: Edith Kate born c1891, Henry George born 1894 and William Thomas born1897.

 In 1891 the family were living at 5 Bedford Place Newbury, Henry was working as a Bricklayer’s Labourer. By 1901 the had moved to 6 Denmark Road Newbury. Henry was recorded as a Gasworks Labourer when the census for this year was taken.

 Henry died aged 49 in 1911 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 11th March.

 The 1911 census records Mary Jane living alone at Brixton Rise Cheap Street Newbury.

She died aged 48 in 1916 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 28th October. At the time of her death she was living at Northcroft Terrace Newbury
