Henry was born in Newbury the son of Israel and Ann Curtis (nee Hussey) who were married in 1851 (marriage registered in Kingsclere).

Henry’s siblings were:

Alfred born in Newbury in 1849 (before his parents marriage, the birth was registered as Alfred Curtis (MMN Hussey).

Matilda 1853 (died aged 2 in 1856 buried in the NRC on the 9th May)

Edward 1857

Charles 1859

 Possibly Caroline born c1851 as the 1861 census records this child although there does not seem to be a birth registration for her.

 

In 1851 Israel was working as a Blacksmith and Ann, Alfred and Israel were living with Israel’s parents and his brother Isaac in Back Lane, Newbury.

 

In 1861 the family were living in Eyles Yard Bartholomew Street Newbury and Israel was working as a Marine Store Dealer.

 

Henry’s father Israel died aged 32 in 1862 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 5th May.

His mother Ann died aged 36 in 1865 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 11th November.

Henry aged 8 was recorded in the Newbury Workhouse in the 1871 census.

He married Mary Jane Moss on the 20th July 1889 at St John’s Church Newbury. (Mary Jane was born in 1868 in Newbury the daughter of George and Esther Moss (nee James) who were married in 1848 (marriage registered in Abingdon)

 

Henry and Mary Jane had the following three children: Edith Kate born c1891, Henry George born 1894 and William Thomas born1897.

 

In 1891 the family were living at 5 Bedford Place, Newbury, Henry was working as a Bricklayer’s Labourer. By 1901 the had moved to 6 Denmark Road, Newbury. Henry was recorded as a Gasworks Labourer when the census for this year was taken.

 

Henry died aged 49 in 1911 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 11th March.

 

The 1911 census records Mary Jane living alone at Brixton Rise, Cheap Street, Newbury. She died aged 48 in 1916 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 28th October. At the time of her death she was living at Northcroft Terrace Newbury.
