A Farming Family
Norman Goddard (who was christened William Norman) came from a long line of local farmers. His father was Simon Goddard (1792-1872) by his second wife Ann Povey, from another local family. Norman farmed at Cold Ash, but his family tree can be traced back through various documents to Johannis (John) son of Johannis baptised at Welford on 18 January 1563. A thorough examination of Manorial Court deeds could trace the family even further back to the well established Goddard farming family of Bucklebury. John's grandson Simon was born in 1630 and started a long line with that first name. Norman did not marry. His brother Henry died aged 8 in 1856. His brother Robert perhaps was strong enough for working on a farm and worked as a draper's assistant at a shop in Newbury before dying aged 24 in 1870. His sister Alice Georgiana, born 1850 appears to have died before Norman made his will because he left everything to his surviving sister Elizabeth who was married to William Bebbington. With such a long association with the Newbury area and so many descendants of the original Johannis Goddard remain in the area. There are several about whom more is known. Ann kept a Berlin Wool shop at 80 Northbrook Street in 1861 & 1871 censuses. John Charles born 1831 left farming and became a master baker. His bride's wedding dress has been given to Newbury Museum.
