Robert Lynch

c1815-1853

Robert was known as both Robert Lynch and Robert Paice. He was baptised as Robert Gough Lynch on the 15th December 1815 at St Nicolas Church Newbury the illegitimate son of Maria Paice Lynch and Thomas Gough, a Porter.

His mother Maria was baptised on the 24th October 1792 at St Nicolas Church Newbury the daughter of James and Elizabeth Paice (nee Edwards) who married in Speen Berkshire in 1783. (By 1807 Elizabeth and her children was living with John Lynch, a Watchmaker.  In the 1815 census of Newbury the children were recorded with the surname Lynch).

Maria also had three other illegitimate children with Thomas Gough. Thomas Gough Lynch was baptised on the 17th October 1817, Henry Gough Lynch was baptised on the 7th April 1819 and William (no middle name) Lynch was baptised on the 10th March 1822. (Maria was recorded on all of the baptism records as Maria Paice Lynch).

Maria married (as Maria Paice) Edward Golding (a Shoemaker, born c1799 in Henley Oxfordshire) on the 2nd January 1825 at St Nicolas Church Newbury, they had the following children (all baptised at St Nicolas Newbury):

Caroline baptised 3rd April 1825 (died aged 1 in 1826 buried on the 14th August at St Nicolas Newbury)

Mary Ann baptised 16th March 1827

George baptised 1st November 1829

In the 1841 census Robert (20) (surname recorded as Linch) was recorded as a Labourer living with his mother Maria Golding (40), step-father Edward Golding (40), a Shoemaker, his brothers Thomas Linch (15), a Labourer and William Linch (15), an Apprentice Shoemaker, and his half-siblings, Mary Ann Golding (12) and George Golding (10), in Old Newtown Road Newbury.

He married (as Robert Paice) Mary Langton in Newbury in 1845. Mary already had at least one child, George born in 1843, baptised on the 29th October at St Nicolas Church Newbury

The 1851 census records Robert Lynch (29), as a Labourer (Iron Foundry) living in St Mary’s Hill Newbury with his wife Mary (25), his son Henry Lynch (5), (no birth registration found) his stepson George Langton (7) and his mother-in-law Jane Langton (50)

Robert and Mary had a daughter Fanny born in 1851 (birth recorded as Fanny Pace)

Robert Lynch died aged 31 in 1853 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 4th March (death registered as Robert Linch)

Mary remarried in 1856 (as Mary Pace) her 2nd husband was a widower, Charles Mosdell. She died aged 42 in 1867 and was buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the15th August.
