Thomas Cox

c1814-1863

Thomas was born in Newtown Hampshire he was baptised on the 26^th June 1814 in Silchester Hampshire the son of Aaron and Sarah Cox (nee Hill) who were married at St Mary and St John Newtown on the 14^th April 1803 (Aaron was from Silchester).

Thomas’s parents and siblings:

Aaron was baptised in Fawley Berkshire in 1779 the son of Edward and Elizabeth Cox (nee Froom) who were married at St Mary and St John Newtown on the 18^th March 1772 (Edward was from Fawley Berkshire). Aaron died aged 65 in 1844 (death registered in Newbury).

Sarah was baptised in Newtown Hampshire in 1775 the daughter of John and Sarah Hill (nee White) who were married at St Mary and St John  Newtown on the 17^th October 1774 (John was a Rakemaker). Sarah died aged 62 in 1839 (death registered in Newbury)

Aaron and Sarah also had the following children baptised in Silchester:

In 1841 Thomas’s father Aaron (60) was recorded as a Farmer in Newtown near Newbury Berkshire. Also recorded in the household were his sons Aaron (35), a General Smith and Jenner (20), a Farmer.

The family lived in Newbury, Northbrook Street (1841), Toovey’s Yard (1851) and Parr’s Yard (1861) and Thomas was recorded as a Baker in all three census records.

Thomas died aged 49 in 1863 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 9^th May

Mary after Thomas’s death:

Mary remarried in 1866 in Kensington her 2^nd husband was William Toovey. William died aged 47 in 1871 he was buried on the 21^st January at St Mary Greenham.

The 1871 census records Mary Toovey (54) as an Annuitant, living at 12 Alton Place Newbury. Her daughter Lydia Cox (16), a Milliner’s Apprentice, son Harry Cox (18), a Coach Maker’s Apprentice and her nephew George Kimber (20), a Herdsman, were also recorded living with her.

She died aged 67 in 1880 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 30^th October
