Ivy Vera Elizabeth Stillman (1897 – 1924)

Ivy Vera Elizabeth Day was born 25 August 1897 in Abingdon, the daughter of William Henry and Esther Elizabeth, nee Hall, Day.

In the 1901 census Ivy was living with her grandmother Jane Hall in Tackley in Oxfordshire, Jane was recorded as a gate keeper at a railway crossing.

Ivy was admitted to the Newbury Council girl’s school on 5 April 1909. Her previous school was recorded as Lancasterian. Her father was recorded as William residing at Clifton Villas in Jubilee Road in Newbury. Ivy left the school on 4 August 1911, shortly before her 14th birthday which was the school leaving age at the time.

In the 1911 census Ivy was living with her parents William Henry and Esther Elizabeth, brother William Robert, grandmother Jane Hall and a boarder at 2 Clifton Cottages in Jubilee Road in Newbury, the house had six rooms excluding bathroom and scullery. Her father William was recorded as a railway ticket collector, her brother William as a butcher’s clerk and Ivy as a scholar.

Ivy married Harold Brice Stillman in Q3 1922 in Newbury. Harold was born 1897 in Newbury, the son of Francis Herbert and Sarah Elizabeth Stillman. In the 1923 electoral register Harold was registered at 12 Craven Road in Newbury and in 1924 at 3 Craven Street.

Ivy died in November 1924 at Newbury district hospital and was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 11 November 1924. Ivy and Harold had a daughter Beryl Ivy Elizabeth born around the time of Ivy’s death.

Harold remarried in Q3 1932 in Newbury to Christine Elizabeth Smith. In September 1939 when the national register was compiled Christine was recorded at 98 Craven Road in Newbury but no trace of Harold, so he might have been serving in the forces. Harold died 4 June 1956 while living at 98 Craven Road in Newbury and was buried 7 June 1956 at Henley Road Crematorium in Caversham, Reading.
